in this piece i layered two different movies using jit.op in max/msp. one layer is a straight video. the other layer is a video after its colors are unpacked, manipulated, and packed. that layer is then put through brightness and contrast objects before it is layered back on to the first video. to manipulate, i changed the brightness/contrast, the layering effects, and a few effects on the unpacked colors.

i was very interested in using abstraction to convey a mood, and what is more abstract than text? it is a shape, but when read or spoken, creates a completely different image in our minds. i therefore decided to take excerpts from "The Little Prince" by Antoine de Saint Exupéry and use them to represent and interpret the different characters they describe. both the audio and the video are solely from these excerpts. the first excerpt is of a tippler (drunkard), and the second is of a businessman.

green ambience

this poem gave me trouble to no end, thus the less-than-desirable result. however, my goal was to create a contrast between the traffic ambience in the beginning and the quiet breeze and rustling leaves ambience of the tree. i focused on smooth transitions with the visuals to emphasize a peaceful mood.

color&tape

through this poem, i was interested in conveying a transition of color through rhythm. as the poem progresses, the color changes from red to yellow to green to blue... however, i wanted it to be a subtle transition; hardly noticeable until the viewer is completely immersed in the new color. in order to create rhythm, i focused on the combination of short and longer clip lengths. i also split the piece into two "forms" or "movements". i felt this would add to the sense of musicality and would work to bring the piece together better.
